It’s over and it went so fast.

It was an amazing experience and we made it. We, the Globe Forum Team, succeeded in making the biggest conference that ever happened in Gdansk. We brought sustainability and innovation to discussion and we were astonished how the Polish market is into it.

Thank you Gdansk and thanks to all our polish particpants and partners for an amazing time and for the opportunity to learn so much with you.

And here we are. A whole team of professionals ready to start the biggest conference that ever happened in Gdansk.

Globe Forum Innovators’ Contest – Polish Edition

During the Forum, an onstage innovators contest will take place.
The contest features 12 exciting innovative companies who will present their groundbreaking sustainable innovations. The format of the presentations will be short “elevator pitches”. The audience will vote and decide which innovation is most likely to succeed.

The two-degree campaign has been set up to increase public pressure before the climate negotiations get underway in Copenhagen in December. There are high hopes that a global climate agreement will be drawn up, but there are difficulties in getting all the countries to sign up to an agreement.

Go to http://www.2grader.se/en/ and sign the petition to ensure that:

• a global climate agreement is drawn up
• all the countries in the world sign up to this agreement
• developing countries are guaranteed the opportunity to continue to develop
• the temperature will only increase by a maximum of two degrees.

Sustainability, in a broad sense, is the capacity to endure. It can be defined as the ability of an ecosystem to maintain ecological processes, functions, biodiversity and productivity into the future. In ecology, the word describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time. Sustainable maintenance of the natural world and the responsible use of natural resources is a defining issue of our time.

The word ‘sustainability’ has become a wide-ranging term that can be applied to almost every facet of life on Earth, from a local to a global scale and over various time periods. Long-lived and healthy wetlands and forests are examples of sustainable biological systems. Invisible chemical cycles redistribute water, oxygen, nitrogen and carbon through the world’s living and non-living systems, and have sustained life for millions of years. As the earth’s human population has increased, natural ecosystems have declined and changes in the balance of natural cycles has had a negative impact on both humans and other living systems.

There is now abundant scientific evidence that humanity is living unsustainably. Returning human use of natural resources to within sustainable limits will require a major collective effort. Since the 1980s, human sustainability has implied the integration of economic, social and environmental spheres to: meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Efforts to live more sustainably can take many forms from reorganizing living conditions (e.g., ecovillages, eco-municipalities and sustainable cities), reappraising economic sectors (green building, sustainable agriculture), or work practices (sustainable architecture), using science to develop new technologies (green technologies, renewable energy), to adjustments in individual lifestyles.

The Convention Centre Dublin

The Convention Centre Dublin will be the first carbon neutral international convention centre in the world as the impact of the building’s construction on the environment is zero.
Designed to meet the highest standards of environmental sustainability, the venue is being constructed with concrete that has a zero carbon footprint.
Long-term operational requirements have also been prioritised, including energy usage and waste management.
The convention Centre Dublin becomes operational on September 1, 2010 and Globe Forum hopes to be invited as one of the first international conferences taking place on the venue since Dublin represents the type of city we are looking to collaborate with.

Developing an optimal innovation strategy

If one innovation approach is helpful, you might think using more than one approach to innovation would be even better. Not necessarily, write Frank T. Rothaermel and Andrew M. Hess in an article on innovation strategy in the new issue of Business Insight, MIT Sloan Management Review’s collaboration with The Wall Street Journal.

In a five-year study of strategies among pharmaceutical companies pursuing innovation in biotechnology, Rothaermel and Hess found that not all innovation strategies are equally complementary — and that companies can risk wasting resources if they pursue certain combinations of strategies at the same time. For example, the authors note, companies that invest simultaneously in cultivating internal human capital and in external alliances may not get the best return on the combined investment — since the two strategies offer similar benefits.

The best single innovation strategy over all, according to this research? Investing in people. ”The most effective way to achieve continuous innovation over the long term is to hire and cultivate talented people,” Rothaermel and Hess write. “Companies that innovate through hiring will have stronger control over their intellectual property and often a steadier pipeline of future inventions because they aren’t relying on outside partners for any part of the innovation process.”

The Five Stages of Adopting Corporate Sustainability

The report, “Why Sustainability is now the Key Driver of Innovation” from Harvard Business Review, lays out five stages for successfully adopting corporate sustainability. Authors came to their conclusions by looking at best practices at companies such as HP, Wal-Mart, Clorox and others.
Stage 1 – Viewing compliance as opportunity.
Stage 2 – Making value chains sustainable.
Stage 3 – Designing sustainable products and services.
Stage 4 – Developing new business models.
Stage 5 – Creating next-practice platforms.
